Behaviour and Character difference between our 2 chow chows- Santa(male) and Teddy(female)

Although there is a age difference between Teddy(3 years old ) and Santa (9months old). I had observed that certain behaviour and characteristic are inborn.
I have found that beside having our dogs as companions, I had developed an interest of  trying to understand canine behaviour. During spare times, sitting around and observing our dogs behaviour and keeping a record of some of their strange behaviour and try to analysis it thereafter is stimulation. It boost the ego, when  the results of the observations and analysis is correct. A sense of contentment and self reward, when I am able to resolve situational puzzle on what my dogs is trying to tell me through their signal and body language.

Behaviour & character

Teddy

Santa

Response to command if spoken in a loud voice

Instant response

will response– but not immediately-will response on after he had finished what he was doing

Teddy had been discipline since young if she does not response when I raised my voice she will have to face the music.  I will clasped the skin on top of the neck(similar to a mother dog method of discipline)
and a tap on the bridge of her nose.
and  the command is repeated thereafter until she response.
Santa for the last 2 months has becomes more responsive, I believe when he is 1.1/2yrs old- reaching the mature ago – response rate will be similar to Teddy
Santa is being given disciplinary treatment similar to that given to Teddy

Behaviour & character

Teddy

Santa

Response to command if spoken in a friendly soft voice

will response if she likes it

response rate same

Typical chow character – obeying only when they feel like it. I normally do not bother – as these are not criteria commands.
non criteria commands: Play, take, give, go-away, shi-shi(quiet stop barking), WeeWee( go and urinate or pooh)

Behaviour & character

Teddy

Santa

Response to Criteria command
even if given in a soft voice
command like : wait, sit, come

will response even if command is issue in a soft tone—this level of obedience
comes about  when she is 1.1/2yrs old

will response, however at times the command must be repeated. before he response.

Santa will get a hard tap on his nose if commands has to be repeated before he response.

Behaviour & character

Teddy

Santa

Response to A highly Criteria command—this commands is given in a loud voice : STOP , NO

very responsive

same

I have trained myself to only use these commands in a lot voice,  to catch their immediate attention, and in situation I feel Uncomfortable.
Stop: means to freeze all action.
NO: when they are sniffing or performing an action that I forbid. Sniffing  passerby, or dirty items during a walk.
To achieve this level of obedience. Strict discipline and generous rewards when they response during the training period.- I started to train both of them when they are 5months of ago and no let up a period of 2months. Preparing them to have this level of obedience when the time comes to allow for off lash walk.

Behaviour & character

Teddy

Santa

Reaction with other dogs

does not like to mix prefer to  play and sniff around, however if the other dogs is bossy—she will growl

Cannot resist playing with any dogs that appear.

Chow chow is normally aloft, in this instance Santa is difference. Will Santa change when he is older ? will know in 6months time.

Behaviour & character

Teddy

Santa

People interaction

Teddy will not allow stranger to stroke her- very reserve. She will only allow people that she had been in constant contact to touch her. So far only friends.relative, servant and office staff are given this privilege.

Santa—he welcome all,
no problem—touch as much as you like

In this respect Teddy display the typical chow  regal cocky altitude.

Behaviour & character

Teddy

Santa

Protective instinct

Very, any movement or slight noise and sound out the door or gate, she will rush to the door and bark her head off.—Her level of hearing and smell is extreme, on many occasion we are not aware of the sound,.

Same—Santa is a glutton and yet he is willing to stop eating and rush to the door and bark if there stranger.

Superb guard dog- a typical chow character

Attachment to handler

Teddy display his attachment to everyone in the household, and will follow and obey commands from family member. However, I notice that she is more attach to me than other.

Technorati Tags: mood,detection of mood

-unhappy /happy mood. When I am unhappy she will  rub her body against my leg or lay tightly around my foot.. – she has  the art of diffusing an unhappy situation.
If my wife scold my son,  her loud voice will  make Teddy perform an act which I am still puzzle where or how she learn this trick, She will put or tap  her front pawl against my leg if she is standing, or if she is sitting Teddy will put the pawl on her lap——-
She had not been given any training on this act, Why and how she is able to act this way – is a canine secret which  than makes  humans love dogs.
Whenever my sons return from school- Teddy will follow him to his room.
This means Teddy extend her attention to each and every member in her family

Sana is more attach to my wife than me. However he has not failed to display this happy mood of a fast whirling tails and licking me all over when I return from work every evening.

Lately he has developed a behaviour  of jumping up on me and try to lick my face on my return, if I am away for  a few days. Can a dog have a sense of absence ???—It is normal for me to leave the house for a sales trip every month, for the past 3 trips this form of greeting, is Santa new form of greeting whenever I return from my trip.
I know most owners and some dog training books does not condone this type of action.
However—I am happy to accept it , in fact it is a pleasure to have such a warm home coming.

Santa also follow Teddy to my son’s room when he turns from school- I think he does not want to be left out.

These two chows of ours has dispute the concept that chows are one man dogs.
This shows that  loves and good treatment from family members will be rewarded with  love from their chows

Cleanness

Teddy was “house broken” around the 3months. This is around the time she had development bladder control .
As and when she need to ease herself – she will comes to me or my wife and licks our feet- -this is her Signal that she needs our attention. The moment we speak “wee wee”  and if runs towards  the door , this confirm our guesswork correct.

Santa was also house broken around 3 months. We are glad that we have Teddy around to teach her how to signal to us when he needs to ease himself. I think Santa learned this trick from Teddy,
During the initial stage he will follow and runs out of the door whenever we open the door to release teddy out to ease herself.
Overtime he has learn this trick. However, I notice Santa is rather tricky. He do use this licking trick to be released out of the house.

Intelligence and the ability to relate words with action quickly

Bad habits/Phobia

Teddy does not like water. Will walk away or jump over any pool of water, and will avoid wet grass.
Afraid of loud noise: fireworks /crackers.
Will not allow herself to be rollover on her back.
Loves to chase cats and squirrel.
Dislike person wearing black clothing.
will growl, if this person approaches her.

Although Santa when confront with a pool of water will walk around or jump over the pool of water. Playing or sitting on wet glass—not a problem- display no inhibition.
If he needs to rest, does not hesitate sitting on muddy surface or wet ground.
Loud nose has no effect on him—careless altitude towards fireworks.
Rolling him overall on this back and ticking his belly –apparently he likes to be tinkered.
During his daily grooming, turning him from side to side and over back roll- does not bother him.
Santa loves to chase cats as well.

Contrasting behaviour : within the same breed no two dogs is the same
